Based on Arao and Clemens (2013) “From Safe Spaces to Brave Spaces: A New Way to Frame Dialogue Around Diversity and Social Justice" we will discuss what the differences are between the more common "safe spaces" and more equitable brave spaces.
Safe spaces are largely based on white middle class norms whereas brave spaces are about co-constructing norms to advance equity. We will discuss how educators can understand and use this concept constructively to create the conditions for more inclusive and socially just dialogue in schools.
I would love to lead this with a practitioner (like Anna Walker Roberts?). We would care in the concept, ask for examples of safe spaces, and work inductively on getting the group to experience the norm-building process that Arao and Clemens suggest.
